Abstract:
To minimize the damage of brain and disrupted behaviors cause by hardware implantation, an implant-free wireless technique for bidirectional neuromodulation with temporal precision and cell type-specificity is desirable for understanding functional role of neuronal circuitry in various behaviors or neurological diseases. However, existing neuromodulation approaches cannot met these requirements. Optogenetic can achieve temporal precision and cell type-specificity, it requires implantation of light sources or waveguides into the brain. Minimal-invasive approaches, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation and focused ultrasound, offer limited resolution and penetration depth. Chemogenetic can achieve cell type-specificity without implanted hardware, but it lacks temporal precision. To achieve all the requirements for neurological application, a novel technology, magentogenetic, is developed recently for remotely modulate neuronal activity in the freely moving animal without any hardware implantation. In this talk, I will introduce several type of magnetogenetic and how do we apply it in the neuroscience.
